Helping clients select the right stone for the right application.

Stone selection can be a challenge. Even the plainest of stone has markings, veins, fishers and crystalline inclusions which can be a cause for rejection if they have not been seen and approved before the stone is cut. Managing the risks and avoiding rejections is important - re-makes and replacements are painful and expensive.


The Stone Consultants have been working on Stone projects for 30 years. Helping clients select the right stone  for the right application is one of the first tasks.

Stone selection can be a challenge. Even the plainest of stone has markings, veins, fishers and crystalline inclusions which can be a cause for rejection if they have not been seen and approved before the stone is cut. Managing the risks and avoiding rejections is important - re-makes and replacements are painful and expensive.

Identify the application and suitability of the stone:

Before you start offering samples for selection are you sure that the stone is the right for the project?

CE marking and the technical assessment.

Though shunned by many as an irritant and understood by few, the correct interpretation of the correct test results can reveal much about the stone and it’s likely performance for that specification. The certificates offer a real aid to stone selection. Current British Standards BSEN 12058 floor slabs, 12057 tiles and 1469 wall slabs explain the requirements for the stone, including a comprehensive annex on CE marking and Declaration of Performance. Porosity, density and flexural strength are all good indicators for various applications.

Samples:

Pre-contract selection and range samples. Too small and nothing is understood about the stone. 100x100 samples will not tell the whole story. But these are for pre-contract, so accompanied by pictures of slabs available or even a visit to a yard to view the material is an advantage.  The more the client understands the material and its variations,  the less likely there will be rejections further down the line.

Range and contract samples:

Make sure the samples contain all features of the stone. Compare with the range samples and make sure it’s a warts and all viewing. If part of the stone is rejected and the sizes required for the project can’t be cut, then it is better to have that conversation at this stage rather than after production and install.

Feasibility:

But perhaps before selection it would be worth conducting a feasibility check.

The size of the project will dictate quantity and where you buy the material. Can the quarry produce the quantity in the time scale of the project? On a smaller project does the wholesaler have enough in stock from the same block? What is the contingency if you run out or the client adds more stone?

On a larger project, with say 400 + msq of the same material it is essential you can confirm consistency from block to block and that the quality will be maintained.
